Madeira is ...
... an endless up and down
This refers less to history or the economy (although... who knows â youâd probably need some solid research for that). No, here itâs above all about the route profiles: up and down â more or less steep, but almost always with plenty of elevation gain.
... changeable
The weather loves a grand entrance here: sun, fog, rainbow â all in a single day.
(See foreword.)
Luckily itâs more dramatic inland and less so on the coast...
... a culinary wonderland
(Once youâve found the right restaurant đ)
Madeira (Funchal) is ...
... almost daily overrun by cruise ship guests!
And that makes some outings within Funchal... letâs say: challenging.
Addendum 2023:
Scratch the âalmostâ â now itâs daily with multiple ships.
Sometimes it feels like all of Funchal is just another shore excursion off Deck 6.

The weather on Madeira can change completely within 30 minutes.
Just a moment ago blue sky with bright sunshine,
and shortly later it rains under a completely overcast sky.
But the rain here is somehow... different.
It doesn't bother you that much, for two reasons.
On the one hand, the temperature remains constant (at 23 to 25 °C!).
Not like in Hamburg, where it cools down by at least 10 degrees when it starts to rain.
And on the other hand, the raindrops are much smaller here - actually quite a fine drizzle (at least when we got it in the south of the island). And that can sometimes even be pleasant at these temperatures...
